Colour Photographs

In 2015 I began teaching lens-based media on a college design program at IADT Dublin.

It was fascinating to learn how generous the formal systems and frameworks of design were. How well the method worked for sense-making and how with the use of constrained compositional systems thousands of opportunities for expression would open up.

These systems and frameworks are found in music, light and the natural world. They echo together.

I wanted to experiment with these systems that had influenced designers and painters. Particular inspiration came from Karel Martens and Josef Albers and their beautiful colour compositions.

What would the principles these creatives employ look like when applied to light and photography? As you move between 3d to 2d, how would forms be extended?

For this a composition framework of light was deployed. Any object in the field had inherent symmetry or harmonies. This created multiple new forms through the interplay of shadow, highlight and object.

I photographed the images over a total of 11 days, but those days were spread over 5 years as I found it difficult to find the time to make the imagery. I mention this because of how the images have changed in the eyes of others over the course of that time. Initially I wanted to minimise any obvious signs that these were photographs but as people asked what software the images were made with and then if I had used AI I decided to add more organic images and to do minimal photoshop work, now I really want people to know these are photographs, taken in a studio with a lights, a camera, an eyeball and a pair of hands.

I would like to acknowledge support from my colleagues Stu Bradfield, Fiona Snow and Tony Mc Guinness.

Oran Day who challenged me to make photographs that responded to Josef Albers ‘Interaction of Color’.

Finally Special thanks to David Cooper for his patience, expertise and support.

I hope you enjoy the images

These works and this project are dedicated to the O’Brien Family.
